Rural Residence II
The owners committed to a sustainable approach to their homestead many years ago. This included a passive solar heated home supplemented with wood burning fuel and a solar heated pool that convects moist air throughout the residence during the winter months. They take pride in being able to maintain the natural surroundings of the property with minimal outside assistance. To fully understand the nature and ecology of the landscape an inventory and analysis was conducted. The analysis focused on function, aesthetics, maintenance, accessibility, drainage and views. A site character study and viewshed map were prepared to further comprehend the project site and its potential. This was followed by a Site Improvements Plan which allowed the owners to prioritize maintenance and functional improvements over a multi-year schedule.
Enhancements included restoration of the meadow, forest management, enlargement of ponds, paths, garden structures and native plantings that reflect the client’s interests in native flowers and edible fruits. Rain gardens, compost bins and fieldstone walls were built to supplement a sustainable approach to the site.
HLA continues seasonal consultations to reprioritize improvements and assist with material orders and specific contractor services.
